Having a baby is the most life-changing experience and truly a miracle. Having the right support during this time makes a huge difference! Before I had my daughter I thought to myself “What does a doula do?” I know this is something tons of mamas ask themselves too. A doula provides emotional, physical and informational support before, during and after labor to ensure a positive birth experience.
1. Emotional Support
Birth is as much an emotional journey as it is a physical one. A doula offers continuous reassurance, encouragement, and a calming presence throughout labor, helping to ease anxiety and fears. This can look like fear of not being able to “handle” birth, anxiety about things not going the way you planned, or sharing this wonderful and exciting experience with someone who just gets it.
2. Physical Comfort Techniques
From massage and counter-pressure to breathing techniques and guided relaxation, doulas use various methods to help manage labor pain and keep you as comfortable as possible. My mamas love some low back counter pressure during labor!
3. Advocacy for Your Birth Plan
A doula ensures your birth preferences are respected by your medical team by reminding them of your birth plan. A doula can help you make informed decisions, and provide unbiased support if plans need to change. My goal throughout your pregnancy is to remind you of your authority so you and your partner can communicate your needs. I will ask hospital staff to give you time to answer any questions while we discuss how you would like to proceed.
4. Partner Support
Doulas do not replace partners; instead, we help guide and support them in ways that make them feel more confident and involved in the birth process. We also remind your partner to love on you as much as possible to help with oxytocin production. Yup, that means reminding you to have a make-out session or two, if that’s what mama wants of course!
5. Positioning and Movement Suggestions
Changing positions and staying mobile during labor can help speed up the process and relieve discomfort. A doula can suggest different positions and help you find what works best for your body. Remember, these movements and positions also support your baby make their way out to meet you!
6. Continuous Presence
Unlike doctors or nurses who come and go, a doula stays with you throughout labor and delivery, providing constant support no matter how long the process takes. Some even stay until you and baby have your first latch!
7. Postpartum Guidance
After birth, a doula can assist with early breastfeeding support, emotional processing of the birth experience, and guidance on newborn care to help ease the transition into parenthood.
